Gangubai Kathiawadi Review {3.5/5}: A visual treat, but there's a lot about Gangu's story left to be told | Gangubai Kathiawadi Movie Review

Introduction

The film is set in the classic era in the town of Mumbai in an Area known as Kamathipura, the film is a Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial and the female-led protagonist Alia Bhatt’s project together. The film is not about something we talk about every day but its set about how a small-town girl grew to become a queen of Kamathipura.

Story and Observance

Based on S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’ hard-hitting book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Alia Bhatt as a protagonist did justice to the character. In the busy streets of South Mumbai where the film is set, is shown an infamous red-light area– Kamathipura- a place infamous for Kotha (brothel), the screenplay revolves around how does the protagonist is being sold to the brothel, and then her story of how she grew to become a mafia queen from a small girl who was being sold once in this brothel. The story is not only limited to Alia Bhatt but also casts of the film who played equally important roles that were:

Alia Bhatt
Seema Bhargava
Vijay Raaz

The film not only shows the character of the Real Life Gangoo or Ganga as the was named before being sold to the brothel but also shows how does the protagonist wins an election to become the president of the infamous red-light area and how did she fight for the lives of many such women in that area inclusing thier basic rights of livelihood which were being snatched by the common people. Having a multi start cast film, Sema Pahwa and Alia Bhat both in the comma ding role for women proves their ability to be a perfect fit for women centric films.

Conclusion

This Sanjay Leela Bhansali Directorial does justice to the lif of real life Gangoo and was also ruin in cinemas along side many other films. The element which portrayed the romanic life of the protagonist, was not starched unlike many other movies, over all I would like to rate the movie as

3.5/5
