Setup & Supporting Roles

Since the film was teased as trailers, the only sense one could get out from the work and that is of Horror. Director Ashok is known to create such works. The film is set up in Madhya Pradesh and got introduced as a horror film. But as and when the story unravels, it came out to be a Political Expose using the horror concept. Supporting Actors in the film, mainly Mahi Gill as Satakshi Ganguly and Karan Kapadia as Shakti did justice to their characters.

Observation

I personally have never seen a film that is teased horror but is not actually one. Ashok’s direction of this project makes the film even more suspenseful. The character “Ishwar Prasad” which was played by Arshad Warsi was an appropriate Cast chosen for the film. Not to forget, the protagonist “Chanchal Chauhan” who was played by Bhoomi Pednekar did a commendable job of the role given/assigned to her. While watching this 2-hour corrupt tale of horror, I could not even come to a conclusion of the screenplay till the last 30 mins, which made me believe that every film is not losing its viewers in the beginning. The film will definitely not allow you to leave in between, thinking of preconceived notions of a typical horror film.

Ashok’s choice of Arshad Warsi as Ishwar Prasad, not only did justice to the character but also allowed viewers to explore the actor’s potential to play even these roles. Arshad Warsi’s foul play in the political career was exposed by his own deeds at the end. It also seems that, in the entire screenplay, politician: Ishwar Prasad played a huge role in Unravelling Durgamati’s Character out of Chanchal. Ishwar and Chanchal’s horror game of getting villages evacuated, so Bauxite ore could be extracted, and then Ishwar’s plan for fleeing turned out to be against him only.

In the screenplay, it looked as perfectly divided into 2 stories, in the first part “Chanchal & Satakshi’s investigation tale and the other revolves around “Durgamati & Ishwar Prasar’s tale”. One should not miss this tale which featured on Amazon Prime Video in 2020.

Ratings & Conclusion

Durgamati is definitely not entirely a horror film, in-fact a Gut-wrenching tale of Thriller and corruption which gets triggered by a horror concept. I would like to rate it as 4/5. You will definitely not regret watching this masterpiece on Amazon Prime Video. I might have mentioned the Crux, but it’s always a pleasure to see the creative elements of storytelling, which the reviews and writings can not define.
