Introduction
We all know, how religious grounds have only become objectives of the politicians to come to power and it becomes even more dangerous when “Divide & Rule” is being utilized to come to power. Mee Raqsam (I Dance) is a directorial tale of Shabana Azmi’s brother Baba Azmi which based on breaking stereotypes using the tale of “Bharatanatyam”
Cast
Plot
The story is based on a Father and a daughter relationship, where the daughter is willing to learn Bharatnatyam, as her mother also had an interest in the dance form. The story is of a Muslim family where this girl learns the dance form after her mother’s demise but her father faces societal threats which continuously demoralizes the protagonist- “Mariam” but her father continues to fight the societal pressure, in order to make her daughter learn the dance form, even after the withdrawal of support from “Mariam’s” family.
Observation
In difficult times were, it’s almost impossible to find a good story without any cuss words and defamatory scenes, this Baba Azmi directorial definitely continues to glue us to the screens with the clean screenplay. We are in the times of OTT, where the lack of regulation is making directors add, Cuss worlds and unsuitable scenes which makes it impossible for a family binge but its completely opposite when it comes to this film. Naseeruddin Shah also in his special appearance added the main flavor to the film which supports the societal norms of a Muslim community who keeps themselves away from such dances and find them to be derogatory for girls. Any form of art does not have any religion, the better society understands, the better it will be for future generations.
Adding to this, the film also portrays, how difficult it gets for a Muslim girl to learn a dance form from another religion. The fact can never be ignored that no matter what happens “Dance and Religion can not be used to discriminate or differentiate between people and caste never should play a role in the same. One of the best parts of the film is when “Mariam” who was played by ” Aditi Subedi” wins the interstate Bharatnatyam competition and catches the media attention despite going against society. Powerful and also effective dialogues make the screenplay even more interesting. Father’s role was also worth appreciation, in fact was one of the main characters to take the screenplay forward.
Only the ending of the film should also include the reactions of the society and especially the family when Mariam won the competition, this would add even more depth to the story from the side of the unsupporting family and disgraceful society. In my Opinion, Mariam gave a voiceless slap to such people and society after winning the competition. All the supporting actors also did a tremendous job and gave justice to their roles.
